Focus on Listening

This is part one in a four part content series that will cover ways to play so you can focus and strengthen your Clairs. 

In case you aren’t aware of the four Clairs or want a bit more information about them, here is a quick rundown. 

Clairsentience(CS), or clear feeling, is when you feel sensations or emotions from people or situations that gives you information or insight. 

Claircognizance(CC), or clear knowing, is when information pops in your head like a thought that provides information or insight, but there is no way you could have known that information.

Clairvoyance(CV), or clear seeing, is when you see pictures, symbols, images, or even scenes in your head that tell you about a situation or person that gives you information or insight. 

Clairaudience(CA), or clear hearing, is when you hear a word, song or sound that gives you information or insight.

This first episode is going to talk about Clairaudience, which we will abbreviate to CA. The first thing you should know about CA is that it is typically much more subtle than most people expect. The main way I know when it is my CA and not Claircognizance is I can hear inflection in the words coming through. Also, if you have various Clairs that are fairly strong they will sometimes mix. So if you have strong CA and Claircognizant abilities, messages may come through part CA and part Claircognizant. Exploration of your abilities will reveal how exactly this comes through for you. Don’t worry if the way it works for you is different than the way it works for others. The important thing is to get to know YOUR abilities. The better you know them, the easier they will be to access. Make that your focus.

For the first exercise/game I recommend, get yourself some decent headphones, if you can find a dark room that is even better. Listen to one of your favorite songs, one you have listened to hundreds (or if you are like me, millions) of times. Lots of instruments is a plus but not necessary. Close your eyes, and just enjoy the song, but listen closely. Try to notice at least one thing, an instrument, a vocal part, or the way the instruments play off of each other, that you never noticed before. Even just noticing how the song builds, how instruments join or drop out at certain parts, weird pronunciations of words by the singer. Anything along those lines that you may have never noticed before, or perhaps you forgot because of repeat replays. Just make sure you are giving the song all of your attention. When you are finished, enjoy the new little bonus you found in your favorite song!

If you are burnt out on all the music you love or your music player is out of battery power, here is another exercise you can try. Sit in your room, on your front porch, or somewhere in nature where you will not be in danger or interrupted. Close your eyes, and just listen. You can set a timer if you like, but you don’t have to. Try to notice all the sounds going on, people or animals making noise, cars, machinery, wind rustling leaves etc. If you can find one sound that is ongoing try focusing in on that sound. If you do not know what is making that sound try to figure it out. If you can tell what the sound is, try to discern if there is a rhythm to it, try to figure out where the thing producing the sound is located in context to you. If it is a conversation, no matter how muffled, try focusing in to see if you can discern some of the words. The other benefit to these exercises is, most likely you will clear out your own worrying thoughts if you are focusing, even if it is just temporary.

Now, if you want to test your CA ability you can try this exercise. First think of a question you would like insight on. Intend that you would like to receive the answer through CA. You can do this by saying it in your head, something like “I would like the answer to this question clairaudiently please”. Close your eyes, take a few deep breaths, relax, and try to clear your mind as best you can. Ask the question; you can do it outloud or in your head, either one should work. Sometimes I even like to imagine what I would sound like if I were saying it outloud. After you ask, just wait a minute or two. See if any sounds or songs come through. It may be one word, a sound, a whole phrase, or a song you like. Whatever you hear write it down. Open your eyes, and look at the response. Does it make sense in relation to what you asked? It may not be clear at first but try to figure it out, no matter how weird it seems. If it doesn’t, don’t worry, you can try again later.

Additional Thoughts on Clairaudience (CA) and growing your abilities

We have all seen and heard multiple stories and depictions about what CA is supposed to look like, or feel like and of course sound like. The truth of the matter is, it is different for different people. The other truth is that it can change and grow. You may hear it in your ear as an audible sound, and if so that is great. You may be one like me who hears it in their head 99% of the time, and that is great too. If you are a very social person and an audiophile, like I am, you may want this to be your strongest ability. This may be your perfect version of what a psychic ability would be. Having someone telling you the answers into your ear directly seems more tangible and believable. It may give you more faith in what you are receiving as being true. I don’t experience it this specific way, so unfortunately I can’t tell you whether this is true or not, but try not to forget that your ego, emotions, and interpretation can have an impact on any messages you receive. 

I am strongest in Claircognizance (CC) which has its own set of pitfalls which I will discuss in that future Focus piece. I have at times received messages when I was not deliberately tuned in to my guides and in hindsight was feeling pretty emotional, that felt very much like the ones I receive when I am tuned in and focused. I was sure it was true and then it wasn’t. It can be frustrating. Your feelings about a situation can influence how you interpret the message. This is why it is important to have focus. Reflect daily, even for 5 minutes. Get used to reaching that balanced, quiet part of your mind. It can be very hard at first but keep doing it and eventually you will find that quiet (or at least quieter) place in your mind. If you believe you have received a message at a random time when you weren’t focused on doing so, and feel unsure, you can check in with your guides to verify. Find a place to focus, calm, and center yourself and ask for verification.

As you go on and work with these abilities more, it will become easier to find that focus. That doesn’t mean you will reach perfection, there is always a chance you will misinterpret or not be able to get the connection you want, so patience is key. Have patience with yourself, and give yourself permission to make mistakes because you will learn from those experiences. Celebrate your successes, this will sow more success. Eventually you will find the balance that works for you, don’t lose faith in that. 

One of my favorite things about CA are those times when I am having a rough day, I am facing a difficult situation, and I am ready to give up, and I suddenly hear “Don’t Back Down” by Tom Petty play in my head or something similar. The supportive messages from our guides are so fulfilling and reassuring. Moments like that let us know that they always want us to reach our full potential and they are supporting us. Being able to help others with these abilities is an amazing feeling and one that keeps me on track with learning and growing but I also believe everyone should try it for themselves. Even if it is not your purpose or desire to do readings, just being connected for your own benefit is wonderful. It can remind us that the universe is supporting us to find and achieve our passion and purpose, whatever that may be.

Self-Guided Meditation: Experience Your Own Energy

This is a meditation exercise that is intended to tap you into that energy that lies deep inside of you. This energy is pure and beautiful and contains unimaginable love, strength, and joy within it. Get as immersed as you can and don’t forget to bring the energy back down because staying connected in that manner can make you feel clumsy and out of sorts so the grounding part is important too. Also follow this up with some dancing, or anything that makes you move and feel like your regular human self again. Don’t worry the great feelings you got from tapping into your energy will stick around! Also you can repeat this anytime you like:)

Please try to trust what comes through, even if you don’t see yourself that way. That is the point of this exercise! There are deep channels of the most beautiful energy in all of us and being able to feel that energy for yourself could change the way you see yourself in a very positive way. Be open to what you experience, make sure you are calm and relaxed as you do it and enjoy what comes through. Try to go in with the understanding that this is your energy that already exists within you, it’s accessible whenever you want to tap into it or even better, embody it! Let’s get started!

Close your eyes or look at a calming beautiful thing (i.e. Nature or artwork without people in it) Take even calm breaths until you reach a calm and peaceful feeling. Begin to acknowledge your chakras one by one. You can even picture the color that goes with them, this may help immerse you into the experience. Start at the bottom and go upwards as the list below illustrates, the corresponding color is listed next to each chakra.

Root- (between your legs)Red or Brown

Sacral- (pelvic area) Orange

Solar Plexus-(stomach area beneath the rib cage) Yellow

Heart- (the center of your chest, where your sternum is) Green or Pink

Throat-(in your neck/throat) Blue

Third eye or Brow-(between your eyebrows/in your forehead region) Indigo or purple

Crown-(top of the head) violet, white or clear

As you reach the crown, feel the energy continue to extend upward and know that it is connecting with the divine. Once you feel you are connected, ask to be shown your energy as fully and deeply as is possible. Your guides should know what level of sensation you will be able to handle but if it feels like too much you can ask them to pull it back, if you can’t feel it as well as you’d like ask them to make it stronger. Once you feel the energy at the level that is comfortable just sit and enjoy it. I wouldn’t recommend more than 5 minutes for the first time, but don’t worry you can always do it again it if you enjoy it!

You may feel a great warmth, tingles, and undeniable strength or any number of things. You may see colors or hear music or words. Descriptive phrases may pop into your head. The main intent is to enjoy it but if you feel compelled you can write down the sensations you receive.

After 5 minutes, thank them for their assistance then start pulling that energy back down through the chakras in reverse order from above. This will help ground you. Continue until you reach the Root Chakra. Now ask that this new knowledge be integrated but also to be available to you whenever you need to access it.

Self-guided Meditation: See your positive impact on the world

Get in a comfortable sitting or laying down position and close your eyes. Take calm even breaths, listening to your breath as it enters and exits. Once you are reasonably relaxed and clear minded, envision a vase. You can put whatever design on it you like, something that makes you happy! You are going to put one flower in this vase now for each time you did any of these things today:

Each time you made someone smile or laugh today, even yourself.

Each time you’ve overcome a challenge, even things like getting something you needed while staying in your comfy spot on the couch through ingenuity. 

Each task you completed today.

Each time you didn’t spend your energy on something it would have been wasted on.

Each time you complimented someone.

Each time you celebrated yourself or gave your self credit.

Each time you showed yourself or anyone else love.

Each time you received a compliment simply by saying thank you.

Each time you had a bad moment in your day and managed to pull yourself out of it.

Each time you practiced self care, even if it was just saying no to something you couldn’t do or making a healthy choice for yourself.

Now appreciate the beauty of the flowers, their rich colors, the beautiful fragrances they emit, the soft velvety petals on each one. As you do realize that each one represents a positive impact you made on the world today. See the full glory of just one days effort. Know that tomorrow it will be even more full and beautiful. In fact, put this intention on the bouquet you created and watch as the flowers transform into butterflies. Know that each one is carrying your love out into the world. Know that each one will be a moment of magic and joy for someone in the world. Imagine the smiles that appear on all the faces who see those butterflies and know that all that joy and magic originated from you, that it has always and is always within you and never diminishes. When you are finished enjoying this visual representation of your positive impact on the world, ask that the feelings you experienced stay with you, that you stay conscious of the joy and love you bring through the world.
